Navigating Uncertainty with Scenario Planning
In an ever-changing landscape, the ability to anticipate and adapt is more critical than ever. Most of us scenario plan daily in our personal lives without even thinking about it.
For example, I recently had a conversation with my newly graduated son to discuss his career goals. His initial plan—to go straight into an MBA program—didn’t work out as expected. After being declined due to limited experience, he reassessed his options. Together, we explored alternative paths: expanding his current part-time job, saving for future studies, considering programs in psychology or social services, and gaining relevant work experience to strengthen future applications. Through this process, he began to map out multiple possible futures based on what he knows now and what might unfold.
This experience is a perfect example of scenario planning—a strategic approach to navigating uncertainty by considering a range of possible futures and preparing for each. Whether you’re planning your career, a project, or an organizational strategy, scenario planning helps you stay flexible, resilient, and ready for change.
This summer, our partners at the Gilead COMPASS Initiative® at Emory University hosted a two-day Scenario Planning workshop, guiding over 50 community-based organizations (CBOs) through an adapted scenario planning model called PPSS —Pivot, Partner, Sleep, and Stop. Designed specifically for small, Southern community-based organizations, the training included a workbook and coaching support to help participants build resilience in the face of funding shifts and increasing community needs.
The Healthy Nonprofit Network, in collaboration with the Gilead COMPASS Initiative will continue to support these organizations with ongoing coaching and technical assistance, especially for those facing steep and imminent financial challenges.
