Ten Actions Nonprofits Can Take Now To “Future-Proof Your Funding”
Missed our recent webinar? Read on for a quick recap and discover the top actions your nonprofit should take now to stay relevant and funded. The Healthy Nonprofit Network team has compiled practical strategies shared by nonprofit consultant Ty Boone during the webinar—tips you can put to work right away.
- Map your funding sources by category (federal, state, local, foundation, corporate and individual donors) and educate yourself about the current priorities of each.
- Diversify funding and funder relationships to avoid reliance on any one source. Start by identifying one new revenue stream to explore this quarter.
- Review the language across your proposals, website, and reports – can your impact messaging still hold if common buzzwords or labels are removed or shifted?
- Conduct a mini-capacity assessment using the following categories: leadership and governance; program delivery systems; evaluation capacity; and financial infrastructure.
- Strengthen program evaluation and documentation of outcomes.
- Review your last grant rejection. Is there anywhere you might have lacked documentation, clarity, or evidence of capacity? Fix that!
- Map your current partnerships. Are they transactional or transformational?
- Identify a regional or issue-based collective impact initiative and consider how your organization can support or participate.
- Create a staff and volunteer retention plan.
- Cross-train current staff and start leadership shadowing or peer mentoring inside your organization.
