Unity for Impact Roundtable 2 RECAP: Why Go It Alone? The Strategic Case for Fiscal Sponsorship
Small nonprofits are navigating big challenges, and you don’t have to do it alone. This spring, the Healthy Nonprofit Network is hosting a three‑part roundtable series designed to help you stay responsive, grounded, and connected in a rapidly changing environment.
Presented April 30, 2026
Fiscal sponsorship is becoming a more common way for community-based organizations to launch new ideas, grow programs, or work together without taking on the full administrative and compliance burden of forming a new 501(c)(3). We typically see start-up nonprofits engage fiscal sponsors to launch their programs or agencies. However, more and more seasoned organizations are choosing to stay with fiscal sponsors (11 Trends in Philanthropy Report 2024, Johnson Center).
For smaller or resource-constrained organizations, fiscal sponsorship can provide the infrastructure and support needed to allow more time to focus on the work that matters most while another organization handles financial management, compliance, and other back-office functions. For fiscal sponsors, these arrangements can create efficiencies and deepen impact by partnering with mission‑aligned projects already serving the community.
This session highlighted key considerations and real-world experiences from nonprofit leaders who are navigating fiscal sponsorship firsthand. We focused on practical questions, common tradeoffs, and what it takes to make these relationships work well for everyone involved.
